HBA Urges City of Dallas to Table New Zoning Fees; Continues to Work on Building Inspections Budget

The HBA continues to work through the budget information that it has received from the City of Dallas in order to understand how the Building Inspections Department is being funded and what resources are being allocated to other operations. A recent attempt by the city to adjust certain zoning fees (raising many) was tabled by the Economic Development Committee at the request of the HBA and other industry groups until more discovery about next year’s budget can be done.

Currently there are two budget line items of concern. These would move council authorized hearings (up to $1 million) over to the general fund and another would do the same for historic preservation ($600K). This would free up capacity for the BI enterprise fund to serve those who are actually paying the fees that support it. These items are currently “below the line,” meaning that they will not be approved unless the industry’s lobbying efforts can convince council to move these items back “above the line.”
