Proposed Grading Change to Southern Pine Lumber May Have Serious Impact

The residential home building industry was almost brought to a screeching halt last week, thanks to a proposed change that could decrease the value of a popular building material. Earlier this month, the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) announced that it might decrease the quality of Southern Pine lumber by nearly 30 percent on October 20.

Timber’s quality is measured in design value, which is determined by its strength and flexibility. This quality rating serves as the basis for span charts and engineering design standards, which are referenced in building codes. [Read more...]

Kent Conine inducted into National Housing Hall of Fame

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) inducted Dallas builder, developer and past HBA, TAB, NAHB President C. Kent Conine into the National Housing Hall of Fame May 20, during the association’s board of directors meeting in Washington, D.C.

Conine, the president of the Conine Residential Group, served as the NAHB president in 2003 and led the association’s effort to improve all facets of the home building industry. He was at the forefront of fostering innovative ways to create a secondary market for acquisition, development and construction loans to improve capital flow to the industry.

“Kent has dedicated much of his life to making a lasting contribution to the housing industry and to the consumers our industry serves,” said 2011 NAHB Chairman Bob Nielsen, a home builder from Reno, Nev. “He has provided tremendous leadership to this association and the home building industry, and we are proud to honor him.”

In addition to being a member and past president of NAHB, Conine is a past president of the Texas Association of Builders and the National Association of State of Housing Boards.

He served as HBA’s president in 1997 and received the Hugh Prather Trophy, the HBA’s highest honor, in 2000.

Since 2008, Conine has served as chairman of the governing body of the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, a state agency responsible for affordable housing, community services and energy assistance programs. He also is a board member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas and the Home and Apartment Builders of Metropolitan Dallas.

Conine received a bachelor’s degree in finance from Texas Tech University.

The National Housing Hall of Fame was established in 1976 and honors nearly 200 builders, developers, architects, financiers, land planners and government administrators who have made major contributions to the housing industry. Hall of Fame honorees are selected by the National Housing Center Board of Governors.

Conine joins such historical giants as Frank Lloyd Wright, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman, who have also been honorees in the Hall of Fame.

Dallas HBA members have received this honor only three other times in the past. Other inductees were Wilson Brown, Dave Fox and I.P. “Ike” Jacobs.

Home Front Column: A Good Season (Session) for the Home Team

At the time of this writing the end of the regular legislative session is just a few days away and many of the conclusions drawn in this column will be a best guess on how I think things will play out. While I’m at it, I’ll go ahead and pick the Heat over the Mavs in six games for the NBA Finals (yeah, just like 2006). We all sort of thought the season would end that way, but were pleasantly surprised to see a good result for the home team. The same exact thing can be said about the 82nd Session of the Texas Legislature. [Read more...]

Permits Continue Strong in Texas

Nineteen cities are issuing housing permits at twice or more the rate per population as the rest of the country. Five cities are in Texas, with two more just over the border in Louisiana and Arkansas and six in the Carolinas and one just over the border in Georgia. The list also includes Des Moines and Omaha, close together in the central plains plus Nashville, Provo and Bradenton-Sarasota. [Read more...]

Municipal Election Results are In; Dallas Mayoral Race to Runoff

Dallas Mayoral candidates take turns answering questions at the HBA Dallas Division's Mayoral Forum. Mike Rawlings (standing) will take on David Kunkle (right) in a run-off election on June 18.

The HBA has compiled results from numerous local elections in our service area. To find them, download the Excel document linked below. Results sorted by county can be found in the tabs at the bottom of the sheet. The marquis race that still remains is for Dallas Mayor where former Police Chief David Kunkle will take on former Pizza Hut CEO Mike Rawlings in a runoff election on June 18.

Saturday’s results saw big wins for many candidates that the HBA’s HOMEPAC invested in. As such, we look forward to an even stronger partnership between elected officials and the housing industry.
